Dipley’s deputy, Gary Waldhorn, has died at the age of 78.
The actor is best known for playing the role of rising counsellor David Horton in every episode of the popular television sitcom from 1994 to 2007.
His most recent appearance came on a Christmas special, The Vicar Of Dibley In Lockdown, alongside star Dawn French, who plays Rev Geraldine Granger, and James Fleet, who plays his on-screen son Hugo.

His son, Josh Waldhorn, said he “died peacefully” at 6.45am on Monday.
“We will all miss him terribly,” he said.
“He was classically trained, and theater was where he really thrived and left a legacy of entertainment that he saw recurring on Broadway and West End boardrooms and our living rooms on television.
“He left behind his two grandchildren, Cooper and Bayley, and his son, Josh.”
Fellow actor Samuel West paid tribute to Waldhorn on Twitter, calling him “a lovable guy and a wonderful actor.”
Sad news about Gary Waldhorn. He played my father, the eponymous King, in both parts of Henry IV in Old Vic in 1997 (here with my actual father as a non-divorced father, Falstaff).

He posted a picture of himself, his father Timothy West and Waldhorn, with the words: “Sad news of Gary Waldhorn. He played my father, the eponymous king, in both parts of Henry IV at Old Vic in 1997 (here with my actual father as a non-divorced father, Falstaff). A beautiful guy and a wonderful actor. RIP.”
Waldhorn has appeared on classic British TV shows including The Sweeney, Brush Strokes, Hotel Babylon, and even appeared on the comedy show French And Saunders.
He was an accomplished Shakespearean actor and has performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in productions such as Much Ado About Nothing.
Waldhorn has also played Max alongside BAFTA winner Trevor Howard in Vivian Stanchal’s Sir Henry at Rawlinson, and has provided voiceover in advertisements for Green Flag, Kwik Fit, Branston and Marmite among others.
A statement from the BBC’s comedy team said: “Gary was an incredibly talented actor who is fondly remembered for his many appearances on some of the BBC’s most treasured programmes, and of course as a consultant to David Horton on The Vicar Of Dibley.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
