As part of the NAACP production partnership with CBS Studios, Whoopi Goldberg has recorded a new show along with new comedies starring D.L. Hughley and Earthquake.
Deadline stated that five shows are scheduled to be released under the new project that will span across broadcast and broadcast platforms. The shows range in genres of drama, comedy, and limited series and will include new and reruns of content.
Among the offerings is a reboot of the cult 1991 movie Soapdish which will be broadcast on Paramount+. Whoopi will reprise her original role alongside Jennie Snyder Urman, who co-wrote the drama.
Meanwhile, one of the original kings of comedy, Hughley, is set to return to television to headline an autobiographical comedy series on either Fox or CBS. Fellow comedian Earthquake has also recorded his own comedy series.
The show’s new rosters come more than a year after the NAACP and CBS signed an exclusive partnership deal aimed at providing more on-screen opportunities for diverse talent, The Hollywood Reporter noted. The network followed through on the deal by appointing Sheila Doxworth as president of CBS in October 2020,
With her newfound strength in the network, Ducksworth has capitalized on the industry relationships she has developed over her two decades in the industry.
“We’re working with Whoopi Goldberg. We’re working with D.L. Hughley. We’re working with Earthquake. We have several other projects on queue that also have great talent attachments that we’re very excited about,” Doxworth said.
Thanks to her long history with Whoopi, it was easy for Ducksworth to jump on a Zoom call and decide what they wanted to do. Their shared love of Soapdish is what eventually led to the upcoming reboot.
Ducksworth is also a fan of both Hughley and Earthquake and was very happy to give them opportunities on the big screen.
“It’s representation at its best, it shows different sides of life, different opinions, different types of people out there, and that’s our goal with all of this: to fully include all kinds of different perspectives in everything we do,” said Duxworth.
