Jurgen Klopp says he knows Mohamed Salah wants to stay at Liverpool, and insists contract negotiations with the Egyptian are in place.
Salah said in an interview published by GQ this week that he is “not asking for crazy things” in contract talks, as he reiterated that it is up to Liverpool to decide his future.
The striker, whose contract at Anfield expires in the summer of 2023, has stated that he wants to stay at Liverpool but the two sides have yet to reach an agreement on a new deal.
“At present, it is dangerous to do these interviews when you are not talking to the player himself,” Klopp said ahead of Arsenal’s visit to the Carabao Cup on Thursday, live on Sky Sports.
“I know Mo wants to stay, we want Mo to stay. These things take time, but I think it’s all in a good place. I’m very optimistic about that. The fans aren’t as nervous as you (the media) are.”
“They’ve known the club for a long time, they’ve known the people who deal with different things here for a very long time, so I think that’s reason enough to be positive.
“But as long as it doesn’t happen, we can’t say anything about it. Good conversations, that’s what I can say.
“There are many things you have to do in these negotiations. There is a third party, the agent is there as well, but there is nothing to worry about, it is a normal process.
“Don’t worry. It’s just the situation. He has a contract here this season and next season. Really, everything is fine. It’s not finished – that’s why we don’t get that news – but we have talks.

“That’s just the situation, but it’s all right. He’s a world-class player, a great boy, he did great things for Liverpool and we want to keep him.”
Klopp said he also sees no reason why the striker, who is currently in the Africa Cup of Nations, could not stay at the top level until his mid-30s like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
“His personality, his determination, that’s how he trains. His attitude, his work rate is incredible, first in the end, finally, he’s doing the right things.
“You can do some not so good things when you’ve been in training and in the gym for a long time but he knows his body, he knows what to do and he listens to the experts here.
“He’s trying to get better all the time. He’s working hard for the situation he’s in now and he’s not going to waste it by doing less.”
Mohamed Salah insisted he wanted to stay at Liverpool, but he put the onus on the club to get the deal done. What factors play a role in Salah’s negotiations?
Sky Sports News correspondent Vinnie O’Connor, who covers the club closely, explains the situation…
First of all, it is not just about money. Salah remains ambitious, with his hunger for victory undiminished.
At some point, this Liverpool team is going to need an update. Roberto Firmino is now 30, Sadio Mane is 29, Jordan Henderson is 31, Thiago Alcantara is 30, Virgil van Dijk is 30 and Fabinho is 28.
Salah will want to see that there is an ongoing commitment from the club to add quality to what they have, with the goal of keeping Liverpool competitive for titles.
Salah is now Liverpool’s best player ever as the Premier League and Champions League winner.
Therefore, in terms of the wages he can command, his market value is as high as ever.
The moment of the Premier League tour is Mohamed Salah’s goal against Chelsea. The Egyptian striker scored his 150th goal in English football to help Liverpool draw 2-2 at Stamford Bridge
He has been ranked as the best player in the world at his current level, however, he is currently said to be the fifth highest paid footballer in the world.
He was the highest earner at Liverpool until Van Dijk signed his new contract. Now the numbers being talked about for a new deal are in the range of £300,000 a week.
Salah’s current contract expires in 2023. It makes sense, at the age of 29, with this potentially the biggest contract of his career, that he wants a deal that reflects his standing in the game.
Salah wants to stay
At the same time he wants to stay in Liverpool. He told Sky Sports in October that he would like to spend the rest of his career at the club.
“If you ask me, I’d like to stay until the last day of my football career, but I can’t say much about that – it’s not in my hands. It depends on what the club wants, not on me,” he said.
He has a strong relationship with Jurgen Klopp and has settled in the Liverpool dressing room.
Even when he was linked with Barcelona, while he was flattered, he said he is happy at Liverpool and at the moment would prefer to stay in the Premier League because it is the strongest league in the world.
But there was a broad hint in the Sky Sports interview that he needed to feel the love from the Liverpool hierarchy and he followed that up in an interview with Egypt’s MBC Egypt.
Salah reiterated that while he wants to extend his contract with Liverpool, Liverpool’s owners have a problem that must be resolved.
“Your financial value shows how much you value the club and that they are willing to do anything for you to stay,” he said.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp previously said he was comfortable with Mohamed Salah’s contract negotiations, insisting that ‘what we all want is clear’.
When Jürgen Klopp was asked about this, he replied: “An extension of the contract with a player like Mo is not something where you meet for a cup of tea and come to an agreement. That is completely normal.
“Mo’s fine, I’m fine. What we all want is clear and things like this need time.”
There is goodwill on both sides to reach agreement on a new contract.
Ideally, Liverpool would like to get this done before they get to the point where Salah enters the final year of his current deal without securing his future after that.
Finding the right shape
From the club’s point of view, they need to find the magic number that confirms Salah’s place among the world football elite, keeping in mind their wage structure and not being bothered with it.
They are also operating in a transfer market where the financial leverage of Real Madrid and Barcelona has been significantly reduced, which in turn reduces the chances of raising potential transfer fees as high as possible if it looks as if the agreement will not go well that will be reached.
Spanish football journalist Alvaro Monteiro says Ousmane Dembele is likely to leave Barcelona as a free agent this summer and has been linked to a number of Premier League clubs.
At the same time, with Salah’s contract expiring, there is a possibility in the future for clubs to improve the wage offer coming from Liverpool if he reaches the stage where he is likely to be available on a free transfer.
Michael Edwards has earned a lot in his time as the club’s sporting director, especially when it comes to tough negotiations.
Before he leaves in the summer, securing Salah’s long-term future at the club could be his biggest success of his time at Anfield.
