The African Nations Cup Group F match between Tunisia and Mali turned into chaos on Wednesday after the final whistle blew twice before the 90th minute.
The match itself was a two-penalty kick as Ibrahima Kony converted his attempt after a handball, but Tunisian Wahbi Khazri could not follow suit as his effort saved Malian goalkeeper Ibrahima Monkoro with 13 minutes left.
Then Zambia referee Yanni Sikazwe initially exploded to finish the match by 85 minutes on the clock, the time display clearly disappointing him. But after correcting himself, he finished the match in the 90th minute, despite a number of second-half stoppages, including two VAR checks.
Tunisia was furious and officials stormed the stadium in protest, but the man of the match trophy was distributed, and post-match press conferences were in full swing before CAF officials decided to play the remaining minutes.
Mali went out to the field to play 40 minutes after the controversy began, but Tunisia refused to play and Sikazwe finished the match for the third time.
On hearing that 20 minutes after the final whistle, Mali vs Tunisia will play again for a few minutes as the Zambian referee finished the match a few minutes before.

After a boring first half, Mali got off to a great start in the second half and just a minute later were awarded a penalty when Boubacar Kiki Kouates’ shot hit Elias Skhiri’s hand while Tunisia’s midfielder turned his back on the ball.
Then Kony went forward to convert the penalty kick with ease and give his team the lead.
Dylan Bron forced a first save from Mali goalkeeper Ibrahima Monkoro with a shot from 35 yards he had to push away from a corner kick, but Tunisia had a better chance of equalizing.
It was Musa Djenebo who handled the ball this time and after consulting the VAR, he awarded Sikazwe the penalty. However, Khazri’s fierce shot was hit by Monkoro as the goalkeeper stopped out excellently.
Mali finished the match with ten men after a harsh red card for Bilal Toure when he challenged the ball with Dylan Bron and was partly behind.
The result follows a 1-0 win trend in the finals, as this was the seventh in 10 matches played so far.
What then?
The two teams returned to play in their second Group F game on Sunday, January 16th. Mali will meet Gambia at one in the afternoon, while Tunisia will meet with Mauritania at four in the evening. Both matches are live on Sky Sports Mix.
