Cristiano Ronaldo claims that finishing outside the top three in the Premier League would not be acceptable to Manchester United.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has called for a change of mindset inside the Old Trafford dressing room to ensure United return to their poor form recently. Ronaldo also backed Ralph Rangnick to lift the club but admits it will take some time for the interim manager’s methods to take root. United are currently seventh in the standings after losing to Wolverhampton in their last league match.

“Manchester United should win the league or finish second or third. I don’t see any other position for Manchester United,” Ronaldo told Sky Sports. “In my heart, I do not accept that our mentality is less than being in the top three in the league. English, in my opinion.

“I think sometimes to build good things you have to destroy some things. New year, new life, I hope Manchester are at the level people want, especially the fans. We are able to change things now.

“We can do it better, each of us. I don’t want to be here at the club fighting to be sixth or seventh. I’m here to try to win and compete. I think if we change our mind we can achieve big things.”

Rangnick was brought to the end of the season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked after a string of poor results in November. The German has managed to stabilize things to an extent, but the team’s style of football remains the subject of criticism, and there have been reports of anxiety within the squad.

Ronaldo added: “He arrived here five weeks ago. He’s changed a lot of things but he needs time to put his ideas to work among the players and on the pitch. It takes time, but I think he’ll do a good job. We know we’re not playing the best football, as we should.” To do, but we have a lot of games to improve.
