The earthquake originated at a depth of 6.1 kilometers below the surface, and several aftershocks followed, although none of them were greater than 2 on the Richter scale.
Speaking with RÚV, natural disaster expert Bjarki Kaldalóns Friis told reporters that this seismic activity does not indicate an imminent eruption. Alternatively, it is likely the result of the volcanic system still stabilizing after the 2014 eruption of Hóluhraun, which is part of the Bárðarbunga system.
The eruption of Holuhraun was a spectacular sight, filled with lava columns about 60 meters high. The remote location of this fissure eruption also means that no people, animals or property are in danger; Instead, it had a visual appeal, and indeed attracted photographers from all over the world.
