Coventry police said the standoff in which a man barricaded himself in a property with his young son since Sunday ended after police officers forced their way inside.
Officers who specialize in firearms entered the property in Coventry just after 8:30 p.m. and detained the 41-year-old. He is under arrest and will be evaluated by mental health professionals.
His eight-year-old son, who is believed not to have been physically harmed, is with another family.
Superintendent Ronan Terrier, of Coventry Police, said: ‘This was a very delicate and difficult siege, with an eight-year-old boy at heart.
“His safety has been our main concern throughout this so I’m sure everyone in Coventry shares our relief that we were able to get him safely out of the house today.
“The situation became unbearable and it was decided to end the siege.”

He added: “At all times we had to balance the risk for the boy staying in the house, and the risk of him being harmed if we actually entered the house.
“Fortunately, it appears he is not physically injured at this point – but is receiving proper care now to ensure he has all the emotional and other support he needs.
“We are incredibly grateful for the way the community has supported us at Earlsdon. We know it has been long, difficult and frustrating, but we did our best to help you through this.
“I would like to thank the firearms officers, negotiators, neighborhood officers and other officers who worked day and night to protect this boy and the public.”
