Sue Gray, the government employee overseeing the investigation into alleged government parties breaking the lockdown, is investigating two departures events held in Downing Street the night before Prince Philip’s funeral, The Telegraph understands.
This means that those present can be called upon by Mrs. Gray to describe the events that were revealed in the Telegraph yesterday.
In recent weeks, Gray has asked some Downing Street employees to hand over their phones as she looks at WhatsApp messages, according to government sources.
The April 16, 2021 event is the latest in a string of allegations of alcohol-fueled gatherings in Downing Street that allegedly violated lockdown rules.
Its conclusions may be published as late as next week at the earliest, although the timing is unclear as the new allegations continue to reach the public domain. On the said evening, Britain was in a period of public mourning while Covid restrictions banned indoor mixing.
One of those events was a party for James Slack, Boris Johnson’s former communications director. Slack, who is now the Sun’s deputy editor-in-chief, apologized this morning “unreservedly for the outrage and the hurt they have caused.”
Security Minister Damien Hinds pledged his full support to Boris Johnson during this morning’s media tour, while Foreign Secretary Liz Truss told the BBC: “Now we need to move forward.”
