Jakarta:

An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck off the Indonesian island of Java on Friday, the US Geological Survey said, while buildings were reported to shake in the capital, Jakarta.

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit the southwest of the island at a depth of 37 km at 0905 GMT.

No tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of casualties or material losses, but the quake was felt in the capital and buildings shook, according to AFP journalists.

An AFP correspondent reported that some Jakarta residents had been evacuated from the buildings and hundreds were waiting in the open after the quake.

25-year-old Noor Latifa described how people in the Kalipata City apartment complex – south of the capital – fled their homes as the earthquake struck.

“I was working from home and I noticed my computer was moving…Then the door started shaking and the hanging things started making noise,” Latifa told AFP.

“I brought my roommate who was in the bathroom and we ran out of the apartment. People outside were rushing toward the emergency staircase.”

Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity where tectonic plates collide, stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin.
