A man with a knife attacked five people indiscriminately at the Arndale shopping center in Manchester, a court has heard.
Manchester Crown Court heard how Raphael Chevello, 43, bought a kitchen knife from the Blackley Pound store near his flat on Rochdale Road, Blackley, on the morning of October 11, 2019, before boarding a bus into town.
He entered Arndale at about 11.05 AM and went to the children’s changing room, where he unwrapped the knife and proceeded with his attack.
Prosecutor Andrew Ford said: “He went off without warning, carrying a knife, and stabbed five members of the public at random.
“It caused fear and panic among the general public who visited the Arndale Center that day and a sense of commotion as people fled.”
His first victim was a 61-year-old engineer, who was stabbed by Schifello in the back, before moving on to a 35-year-old woman who was walking with her husband in the center.

She remembered that Shivelo had a “biggly grin” when he attacked her.
His next target was a 45-year-old woman pushing her child in a pram, and then a 21-year-old woman from Ireland, who was visiting town with friends to celebrate her 18th birthday.
“The guy was looking through me and it looked like he really wanted to hurt me,” she said in a statement.
“I thought I was done”
His latest victim was a 52-year-old shop worker, who remembered after he stabbed her: “I couldn’t move any more, if he came back he would kill me. I thought I was done.”

After the stabbing, which lasted one minute and 27 seconds, Chivelo tossed the knife in a trash can on a nearby street.
After he was caught at the scene, he later told the detained officers, “I was going to stab my ex-girlfriend but I couldn’t bother traveling there, so I took her out on someone in town.
“I’m guilty as sin. I should have done a bank job instead.”
Schifello pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to three counts of intentional injury and two counts of attempted injury.
The defendant appeared at the hearing via video link from Ashworth High Security Hospital and is expected to be sentenced on Monday.
