Tsunami waves wash Tonga after an undersea volcano erupts

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) – A large tsunami swept through Tong after an undersea volcano erupted, sending a plume of smoke and ash billowing.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a major tsunami in Hawaii.

The eruption of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano was so large that it could be seen from space. Residents reported feeling the blast waves after the eruption. And soon after that, the waves crashed on the shore.

“The eruption can be heard literally, it sounds very violent,” Dr. Vakailwatonga Taumofulao wrote on Twitter. “It rains ashes and small pebbles, and darkness covers the sky.”

Earlier, the Matangi Tonga news website reported that scientists noticed massive explosions, thunder and lightning near the volcano after it began erupting on Friday.

The website said satellite imagery showed a 3-mile-wide plume of ash, steam, and gas rising into the air about 12 miles wide.

More than 1,400 miles away in New Zealand, officials have warned of storm surges from the eruption.

The National Emergency Management Agency said some parts of New Zealand could expect “strong, unusual currents and unexpected eruptions ashore after a major volcanic eruption”.
