Actor Jamie Dornan has revealed that he is stuck in hotel quarantine in Australia when he received the news of his father Jim’s death due to Covid after being admitted to hospital for a routine knee operation.
Best known on Fifty Shades of Gray and crime drama TV series The Fall, Dornan, 39, found himself on the other side of the world with four days left in quarantine when his father died last March, unable to return home. A citizen of Northern Ireland.
Dornan has been asked to seclude himself in Australia before filming the BBC drama The Tourist, in which he plays a man who has no idea who he is and why he has been left stranded in the Australian outback.
Figures published by the BBC on Friday showed that The Tourist is the third most successful drama launch on iPlayer, with more than 18 million broadcasts.
Dornan told The Sun that losing his father made 2021 “the worst…and most difficult” year of his life.

“It was a tough time for a lot of reasons and for a lot of people. We’re all just trying to get through it and get out the other side — and hopefully our heads are in order,” he said.
Dornan’s father, Jim, was a famous obstetrician and gynecologist at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast and is said to have been proud that his son starred in Sir Kenneth Branagh’s eponymous Oscar-nominated film which was filmed there, alongside Dame Judi Dench.
The comedy-drama about a young boy and his working-class family caught up in the troubles of Northern Ireland in the late 1960s received seven Golden Globe nominations and won in the Best Screenplay category. It is due to arrive in UK cinemas in late January.
Dornan, who lives in rural Gloucestershire with his wife, Amelia Warner, 39, and their three young daughters, said the Belfast plot resonated with him on a personal level, and he still calls himself “The Belfast Man”, even though he’s left the city at the age of 20 general.
In the film, Dornan plays a father who comes to England to work in the hope that his family will join him there and leave tensions between Protestants and Catholics in Belfast.
“[Belfast] is home. Maybe we feel like this is a certain thing, ‘Belfast man,’ and I think we all know what that means,” Dornan said.
“If you’re from Belfast, no matter what era you grew up in, you’ve been through something.
“You have been through a certain hardship and have been tested at many different stages of your life.”
Jim supported his son’s pursuit of an acting career and helped him overcome the loss of his mother, Lorna, from pancreatic cancer when he was 16, telling his son, “Don’t let that be your thing.”
“I went through, early in my life and now, a lot of pain and loss,” Dornan said.
