Sky News understands that the suspect who was shot dead by officers after taking four people hostage at a synagogue in Texas was British.
One of the hostages was released at Colleville’s Beth Israel complex during the 12-hour standoff, before an FBI SWAT team entered the building at around 9 p.m. local time on Saturday and the other three were released unharmed.
FBI Special Agent in charge Matt Desarno said earlier that there was no immediate indication that the man had links to any broader plan but that the agency’s investigation “would have global impact.”

A spokesman for the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth Office and Development said it was “monitoring the situation” and was “in contact with local authorities”.
The hijacker was heard earlier in the synagogue’s live broadcast calling for the release of Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist suspected of having links to al-Qaeda, who was convicted of trying to kill US military officers while in custody in Afghanistan.
He said he wanted to talk to her. She is being held at FMC Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas, after being convicted in 2010.
The motive behind the synagogue attack remains unclear, although police are trying to determine if he and my friend were related.
Mr. Desarno said Saturday evening that the man had been identified “but we are not prepared to disclose his identity or confirm his identity at this time”.
