Roberto Martinez talks about the expectations of Everton fans

Roberto Martinez has emerged as the hot favorite to become Everton’s next manager, after the club began talks with the Belgian Football Association.

On a dramatic day when Rafa Benitez was sacked after less than seven months and only 25 games, the Blues turned to their former boss, as they were looking for an experienced coach who understood the club’s philosophy.

Martinez indicated that he would like the challenge of reviving the Blues and keeping them in the Premier League, after the great recession that landed them in relegation problems.

But he will not leave Belgium after he led it to first place in the world and the candidates to win the World Cup that will be held in Qatar at the end of this year.

Talks with the Belgian board of directors continued late Sunday night, over a manager who was already the favorite to take Goodison’s job in the summer, until owner Farhad Moshiri decided to hire Benitez.

His reign was always doomed, and he was sacked after the shortest tenure of any coach in the club’s history, after one winning streak in 13 games, and a disastrous defeat by bottom club Norwich.

Benitez tried to exercise complete control of the club, forcing director of football Marcel Brands and famous French star Lucas Digne out.

It also emerged that the ousted coach also refused the opportunity to sign Philippe Coutinho, even after the club agreed to a deal to bring him back to Merseyside, because he demanded the last word on all signings.

Everton will continue to negotiate with the Belgian Football Association and hope to agree a deal that will see Martinez arrive ahead of the weekend’s game against Aston Villa, along with national coach Thierry Henry.

But Moshiri is a fan of former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur coach Jose Mourinho, although the Portuguese coach is on the verge of being sacked by Roma.

However, there is opposition within the club, to another unpopular contract, and Moshiri will put former Everton player Wayne Rooney on the list, along with Frank Lampard, the former Chelsea coach.

Moshiri is notorious for changing his mind at the last minute, as he did with Benitez, as well as in agreeing deals with West Ham coach David Moyes and current Manchester United manager Ralph Rangnick, before withdrawing as contracts were about to be signed.

But a deal with Martinez is believed to be close, with Benitez’s assistant Duncan Ferguson being sidelined, despite talk of him becoming an interim manager.

Benitez spoke last night about his grief over his dismissal. “My love for this city, Merseyside and its people made me accept this challenge,” he said in a statement issued on his personal website.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, that it was a huge challenge, both emotionally and in terms of sport, but only when you are on the inside you realize the scale of the task.

“Not only did we have to get results, but we also had to win people’s hearts. However, the financial situation and then the ensuing injuries made things even more difficult.

I am convinced that we would have been better once the injured players came back and with the arrival of new signings…Unfortunately, circumstances determined the results and it would not be possible to continue this project.”
