French actor Gaspard Ulliel has died at the age of 37 after a skiing accident.

The star of a very long engagement and upsurge Hannibal was taken to the hospital after the accident in the Alps. Ulil was flown by helicopter on Tuesday to Grenoble but did not survive his injury, according to the actor’s family and agent.

Local radio France Bleu reported that Ulil collided with another skier at a crossing point, resulting in a head injury. She added that the other skater was not hospitalized. The investigation is currently underway.

After some television work, Ulil played a small role in the 2001 movie Brotherhood of the Wolf, along with Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci. Acclaimed work in the French films Summer Things and Strayed led to the romantic starring in Jean-Pierre Jeunet A Long Engagement, opposite Audrey Tautou. The performance saw him win a Cesar Award for Most Promising Actors.

Ullil was then cast as the young Hannibal Lecter in the prequel Hannibal Rising, and as Yves Saint Laurent in the biopic Laurent for which he received a César nomination for Best Actor. He later won the Xavier Dolan Prize in It’s Only the End of the World, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Gaspar belongs to this new generation of actors who were making the French cinema of tomorrow,” festival director Thierry Frémaux told Variety. “He was just amazing and talented in equal measure. He gave so much and we will always remember him.”

Ulliel is also known as the face of Bleu de Chanel perfume. He will later appear as the Midnight Man on Marvel’s Moon Night Show with Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke, the trailer of which was released this week. “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of our friend and colleague Gaspard Uliel,” a Disney spokesperson told Variety. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this time.”

Jean Castilles, the French prime minister, praised him on Twitter, writing that Ulil “grew up with cinema and cinema has grown with him.”

French Culture Minister Roselyn Bachelot also spoke on television. “Such a brilliant actor who reaped the scythe of death at the height of his career,” she said. “For nearly 20 years, he’s been present in our lives with great performances.”

He is survived by model girlfriend Gayle Petrie and his son.
