Schools and University of Florina will remain closed until Friday

Florina municipal authorities decided on Wednesday to keep the city’s schools and the University of West Macedonia closed until Friday to allow a full structural assessment of the buildings in the wake of the January 9 earthquake.

Evaluations are currently underway to determine if the buildings can safely house students. So far, most of the buildings have not sustained serious damage and there is little concern about their structural integrity. However, Florina Mayor Vasilis Giannakis decided to wait and make sure a comprehensive report was available before opening it to students and staff.

Florina recorded a 5.3-magnitude earthquake on January 9, with its epicenter only two kilometers from the city and at a depth of 14 kilometers.
