Jurgen Klopp laid the first foundation for Liverpool’s future deal with Arsenal when Gabriel Martinelli promised he would have a “proper career”.
Klopp saw first-hand how quickly the Arsenal striker has developed this season. The 20-year-old has made his way to 11 starts for Mikel Arteta in recent months, playing 90 minutes in each of the UEFA Cup semi-final matches between the Reds and Arsenal.
While Arsenal failed to score in either tie, Martinelli caught the eye on both nights.
Martinelli has worked mainly on Arsenal’s left flank and is the most dangerous when breaking in with his powerful right foot. It is conceivable that he could be considered a direct successor to Sadio Mane in the future, although there is no indication that a transfer is on the cards at the moment.
When thinking about Liverpool’s semi-final win, Klopp was overjoyed about Trent Alexander-Arnold. The right-back both provided assists for Diogo Jota’s goals, but it was his defensive effort against the high-risk Martinelli that pleased Klopp the most.
Speaking of his creative boss, Klopp laid the foundation for Martinelli’s approach to the future when ensuring he’s destined for big things.
“We will talk about [Martinelli] In the future” – Klopp
“I don’t know anyone like Trent, he’s the right-back and he’s decisive, influential and all those kinds of things,” Klopp said (via Metro).
“I heard again last night on the bus on the way home. The TV’s on and you hear people talking. And I really don’t always like it when they say, ‘Yeah, his defense, his defense is not good, but he’s better offensively.'”
“I thought he put in a great defensive performance last night. Little Martinelli, we’ll talk about that player in the future, I can promise you.
“If he’s without major injuries he’ll have a decent career. So it’s really good what Trent did there against him.
“He kept him occupied defensively, and where he turned up, the Trent deal was crazy.
“It’s not that he delivers every day. So there are still sections that can be improved and he has to improve and we will work on it. I won’t stop telling him, but yeah, the package is really fun I have to say.
“I’m not sure what that means [for him] In history, there is still 15 years or any time to play, create, record, learn and improve.
“But the past five years have been a good start in a career I can tell.”

Newcastle ramp up Arsenal transfer talks
Meanwhile, Newcastle are hoping to sign the Arsenal player in January after having had two rounds of talks with him, although interest also comes from Spain.
Newcastle are trying to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno, according to 90 Minutes. Their interest first became apparent on Thursday and there is now an update.
Sky Sports Germany correspondent Florian Plettenberg stated that two rounds of talks had been held between Newcastle and Leno.
The Magpies want to borrow him on loan until the end of the season. Its movement can then become permanent if the landing is avoided. Leno is keen to make the change this winter as he’s looking forward to regular playtime. However, it is unlikely that Mikel Arteta needs a backup for Aaron Ramsdale.
He told Germany’s Newcastle they would definitely want to land him this summer, if it is impossible to reach a deal within the next 10 days.
However, they are not the only club in Lino. Plettenberg claims that two Spanish teams have made “queries” regarding the 29-year-old’s availability.
