Gardy launched an investigation after two men carried a dead body to an Irish post office in an apparent attempt to claim his pension.
The deceased retiree was described in reports as being “supported” by the men as they walked into the building in Carlow County on Friday morning.
The strange chain of events began when a man entered the post office around 11:30 a.m. on Friday, requesting a retirement payment for an older man, the Irish Times reported. His request was denied, and the staff informed him that the pensioner must be present for the money to be delivered.
The man returned soon after with two other men, one of whom was in his 60s and seemed to be supported by the other two. The young men demanded payment of his pension.
No money was delivered and the two men fled the scene, leaving the man’s body after a suspicious woman sounded the alarm with a staff member. The deceased man was reportedly well known to the men who carried his body.
Gardi said they are investigating “all the circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of an elderly man in the Carlo District”. An autopsy will be performed.
A woman who lives next to the post office said her daughter saw the two men carrying the deceased man into the building. “She was leaving my house at the time and said the man looked sick while his feet were trampling. [along] On the floor,” the woman, who asked not to be named, told the Irish Independent.
Carlow Mayor Ken Mornan, a Viana Vail council member, said he was “completely shocked” to hear the news. “I heard there was a commotion at the post office,” he told the newspaper. “I go there all the time and it’s a very busy post office – there’s usually a queue outside there.
“I was absolutely shocked to hear what happened. I can’t believe anyone would do something like this. It sharpens faith, I was just shocked.”
“The whole city is in shock,” Fine Gael Council member Fergal Byrne echoed Mornan’s words. He described the deceased as “a nice man by all accounts and a person who did not offend anyone.”
Byrne said, “Staff in the shop were so shaken by him. I would like to offer my condolences to the man’s family as well. It is a strange and disturbing situation.”
