Predict Manchester United’s ‘conflict’ over Edinson Cavani after Marcus Rashford’s late winner goal | football | sports

Mark Lawrence has announced that the controversy could come after Manchester United’s victory over West Ham United on Saturday as a result of helping controversial Edinson Cavani at the last minute to score the decisive Marcus Rashford goal. The England striker scored the net in stoppage time to settle the three points for the Red Devils, who rose above the Hammers and climbed to the top four places in the Premier League as a result of their recent victory.

It was another frustrating afternoon for United on all fronts, with Ralph Rangnick’s side unable to break West Ham’s resistance for the vast majority of the match at Old Trafford.

However, they finally managed a very important win when Rashford found the back of the net with almost the last kick of the match.

Questions were immediately raised about Cavani’s role in the move, which included all three United substitutes with less than 30 seconds of injury time remaining.

The Uruguayan considered he was in position after a VAR check as he continued his run to get an Anthony Martial pass before slipping towards Rashford.

Lawrence was adamant that the target should not stand up, even though he ran base on the incident on BBC 5 Live.

“He looked offside, Edinson Cavani, he seriously did it,” Lawrence said.

“There’s going to be disagreement about that, I bet. We’ve seen the number of weird decisions from the VAR, you never know.”

It remains to be seen whether the outcome will ultimately prove a turning point for United, who have suffered a lackluster campaign after spending more than £100m on new players during the summer transfer window.

They have won both of their last two games and will hope to continue their positive run against Burnley in their next Premier League game after the winter break.

Rashford insisted his team will look to maintain their newly gained momentum after the final whistle at Old Trafford, stressing that it will be very important to avoid a fall when work resumes next month.

“He’s clearly an important goal and that feeling late is a great feeling,” Rashford explained when asked about his contribution to winning the game.

“We have to use that feeling of winning. We could have been a little bit better on the ball but we got the goal we needed and we can use that as motivation now.

“When two teams are very close to each other at the table, they both fight to be in front of each other and today we managed to get there.

“Now we are sitting in fourth, some teams have matches to play, but it’s good to be in that position.

“The gains are what’s important, when you get consecutive wins you can really start running and that gives everyone confidence.

“We had a difficult week, there were many matches in one week, so a break is required. It will be good for us.”
