Kiev compares German admiral to ‘Nazi occupier’ after saying Putin needs ‘respect’

He said Putin should be given “the respect he demands – and perhaps deserves” and called for a Western alliance with Russia against China.

The German Ministry of Defense quickly condemned the comments and ordered Admiral Schonbach to inform the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and clarify his position.

But it wasn’t enough to quell Ukrainian anger at what Melnik described as “German arrogance and megalomania, which a top Bundeswehr leader dreams of a holy alliance with war criminal Putin and a modern Russian German crusade against China.”

The row comes amid anger in Kiev over Germany’s refusal to allow arms exports to Ukraine.

Ukraine suffered heavy losses and destruction in World War II. “Now that we are suffering and being threatened again, the only appropriate policy is to allow us to defend ourselves,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said, in a separate interview on Saturday.

Germany has made mistakes towards Ukraine in the past. It’s her responsibility to make the right decisions today.”

Berlin refuses to allow arms exports under a long-standing policy of not sending arms to conflict areas.

It also currently prevents Estonia from supplying Ukraine with howitzers under a veto that was a condition of its original export from Germany.

“We would be even more disappointed if Germany not only refused to provide us with defensive weapons, but also prevented others from doing so,” Kuleba said.
