There is now one week left for Fabio Barracci and Daniel Levy in the transfer market to finish any January business in favor of Antonio Conte and Tottenham.

An important month for the Lilywhites as the Italian coach looks to truly make his mark on the club, so far we’ve only seen one player walk out the door with youngster Dylan Markandy joining the Championship squad Blackburn Rovers.

All of that could change in the remaining seven days of the winter market as Spurs look to bring in new players as well as moving forward.

Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli could be two of the big names leaving before the month ends with both players left out of Conte’s plans in west London.

While the Frenchman’s absence came as no surprise given his omission from the Tour squad since the FA Cup win over Morecambe two weeks ago, Alli’s exclusion from Round 20 may have come as a shock due to the injury issues Spurs are facing ahead of their game. against the Champions League holders.

However, Alli was not the only notable absence as Giovani Lo Celso was not included in the London derby.

This allowed young Harvey White to take his place on the bench alongside the likes of Brian Gill, Lucas Moura and Dean Scarlett.

Shortly after team news broke at 3.30pm, Lo Celso took to his Instagram account and discussed his absence from the team.

“Regarding the questions I received, I would like to make it clear that I am in 100% good physical shape. I don’t have a problem and I feel very well,” he explained.

“I wish my team the best of luck in the derby today.”

It was an important game for Spurs in the top four race with Arsenal and West Ham losing points this weekend, and the omission of Lo Celso was a major talking point among fans and then raised questions about his future with only a week left until the day of the transfer deadline.

Conte cited a lack of creativity in his squad after the midweek win over Leicester City, with Lo Celso spending a large part of his Spurs career on the sidelines due to injury, and he is seen as a capable Spurs player. At least try to help solve this problem.

However, the head coach has seen very little of his players during their time together at the club due to an injury sustained in the line of international duty, which has seen the former Real Betis player make just seven appearances since the management change in November.

In response to a question in his press conference after the match whether Lo Celso’s absence indicates that the player’s future lies elsewhere, Conte said: “But I chose the players for this match and this question the club must answer.”

Lo Celso’s exclusion, and Conte’s answer to that question, was evident given Spurs’ lack of options at Stamford Bridge and his future at N17 now looking rather bleak after the coach’s call.

Conte has spent the past two months assessing his squad at Tottenham, and has since passed on his findings to Barracci, Levi and Steve Hitchen, which included his thoughts on whether the Argentine was part of his plans going forward.

The Spurs boss was also asked about transfers when speaking to Sky Sports after the match and made clear his feelings about what it would take for Spurs to close the gap at the top.

“This is not the right moment and also to speak in front of the media. The club knows very well what I think,” he explained.

“The time we need to close this gap, there is not a single transfer market, I think the gap in the past few years has become very, very big and now it is not easy to find the solution in a short time.

“That’s why I’m just focused with the players on working to the end and then we’ll see.

“We have four months to give everything, but if we think we solve with the transfer market then it’s not true. You need many years.

“You definitely have to start, the level of the team has to improve.”

Many fans paid for their failure to sign a single player in the 2018/19 season after falling far behind teams such as Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea, and pointed to the club’s transfer business the following season, which included Lou’s additions. Celso and Ndombele.

Neither move went as initially planned, and now it appears that both, which together have cost the greater of £100m, are not part of the coach’s thinking going forward.

Conte needs to make big decisions if the club is to start, and that appears to be the case with his pick at Stamford Bridge.

Failing to bring in a player or transfer any of the big names so far this month, it will be a pivotal week for Spurs as Conte looks to get the club going in the right direction once again with his master plan.
