Boris Johnson Claims He Takes Nusrat Ghani’s Islamophobia “Extremely Seriously” – British Politics Live | Policy

good morning. It’s getting tough to keep up with all the crises gripping the No. 10 right now, and so at the start of the week may determine whether or not Boris Johnson will remain prime minister by the May election, here’s a quick rundown of his six biggest problems.

Corruption/corruption problems

1) Sue Gray’s investigation into Partigate. The report is expected later this week, but it is not yet out, and Gray, the senior government employee who is running the investigation, reportedly took evidence today from Dominic Cummings, the former prime minister’s chief adviser who made some of the most damaging revelations in the scandal.

2) Nusrat Ghani’s allegations about Islam. As my colleague Peter Walker reports, this morning Johnson ordered a formal investigation.

But the Labor Party said the proposed investigation was not enough. In response to this announcement, Anneliese Dodds, Shadow Equality Minister, said:

This investigation is welcome, but it does not replace the need for an immediate investigation into whether Chief Whip violated Ministerial Act. After yesterday’s shameful government response to serious allegations of Islamophobia, we’ll only know that conservatives are finally starting to take the issue seriously if Michael Fabricant removes the whip for his shocking comments.

3) Allegations of intimidation and extortion by party whips. Ghani was the latest Conservative MP to allege wrongdoing. On Thursday, William and Raj No. 10 were accused of using blackmail to intimidate MPs who criticize Johnson, and he is due to discuss the allegations with police this week.

4) Increasing the national insurance. The Daily Mail is running a “Spike the Hike” campaign and other newspapers are increasingly vocal in their opposition to a National Insurance increase due to take effect in April, and they are cheering Tory MPs who didn’t like it anyway.

5) Fuel prices. Johnson is also under intense pressure to do something about rising energy prices.

6) Of course, Russia may be about to start a land war in Europe.

Here is today’s agenda.

11:30 a.m.: Downing Street holds a briefing in the lobby.

12 p.m.: Alok Sharma, President of Cop26, delivers a speech on fulfilling Cop26 pledges.

Lunchtime: Boris Johnson is expected to give a group TV interview during his visit.

2.30 pm: Michael Gove, Settlement Secretary, takes questions in the House of Commons.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will also meet Maros Ševewicz, European Commission Vice President and EU Brexit negotiator, in Brussels for the latest set of talks on the Northern Ireland Protocol.
