A new leak indicates an actual release date for the Pixel Watch

At this point, I don’t think any of us doubt the Pixel Watch even exists. Sure, we’ve all been expecting for years Google to get into the Pixel-branded wearables game, and we’ve consistently let it down, but the leaks and proof of this yet-to-be-released device are hard to ignore at this point. We’ve seen demos, marketing materials, and even some new digital watch faces in the past weeks, so at this point, we’re only left with knowing when we can actually see this long-awaited Google watch.

According to Jon Prosser — Front Page Tech host and leaker well known at this point — we now have an appointment for the Pixel watch, and it coincides with one of Google’s biggest annual events: the Google I/O.

Since the man who originally leaked the Pixel watch over a year ago via some pretty compelling (and accurate) renderings, Prosser wasn’t saying his sources had a release date for the device. In his tweet, he noted that this is the first time they’ve heard of a real insider date, so we always have to take that kind of information and balance it with a healthy amount of skepticism. However, I’m inclined to believe that’s the exact date for now that Jon has been sourced with the Pixel Watch so far.

Google I/O 2022

Don’t forget that Google I/O – the big corporate conference focused on developers – always arrives in mid-May. Although we don’t have a date for this year’s event yet, we can look at last year as an example. The Activity Week keynote happened on May 18th, so it wouldn’t be too far off to think of an announcement that will happen at I/O with an availability date soon after.

Google tends to focus on Google Assistant (which the Pixel Watch, obviously), Android, Chrome OS, and Wear OS at I/O every year, as part of whatever they choose to show off in the Assistant and Wear OS spaces The announcement of the hour would make a lot of sense. We expect the Pixel Watch to have some Google-specific features that other Wear OS devices likely don’t have, so revealing during I/O would be very convenient.

However, that’s all we have at this point in the Pixel Watch’s availability. I thought we might see it launch and Pixel Notepad sometime in March or April (when Android 12L comes out), but there’s no real reason for Google to put the Notepad and Pixel Watch launch together. At the end of the day, they’ll probably keep Notepad for Google I/O as well, but it really looks like it’s better suited to launch alongside the 12L version if you ask me. Either way, we’ll know more about all of this before long, right? stay tuned
