Zagreb, January 24, 2022 – President Zoran Milanovic on Monday received representatives of the Croatian Earthquake Engineering Center (HCPI) for talks on the condition of damaged buildings in Zagreb in 2020 and the Banovina region.
HCPI was created last October and has become one of the core workforce within the Civil Protection Directorate, the President’s office said in a press release.
HCPI representatives told the president that their participation is expected after major natural disasters when more structures are damaged and a quick response is required from engineers to professionally inspect the structures and provide a rapid assessment of their usability.
They also talked about the condition of buildings and homes damaged in the earthquakes of 2020 as well as the importance of building and reconstruction after the earthquake.
After the March 2020 earthquake in Zagreb, Zagreb Professor of Civil Engineering and HCPI Coordinator Josip Atalic gathered structural engineers who visited damaged buildings and homes, conducted rapid checks and issued labels indicating their usability.
HCPI engineers inspected 25,580 buildings in the Zagreb area at that time, and 813 more since then.
HCPI representatives said they organized themselves after the Zagreb earthquake and visited the area because there was no earthquake plan. They did the same after the earthquake in December 2020 in Sisak Moslavina province, where 1,700 engineers volunteered for inspections.
