Watford have begun the search for their third coach of the season after sacking Claudio Ranieri after just over three months in the job. A club statement on Monday read: “Watford Football Club can confirm the departure of coach Claudio Ranieri.
“The Hornets Board of Directors recognizes Claudio as a man of great integrity and honour, who will always be respected here at Vicarage’s Way for his efforts in leading the team with dignity.
“However, the Board feel that with nearly half of the Premier League campaign remaining, the change in head coach position now will give a new appointment sufficient time to work with a talented squad to achieve the immediate objective of retaining Premier League status.
“No further comment will be made to the club until this new appointment is confirmed in due course.”
Express Sport is identifying the four current candidates to replace Ranieri as Hornets coach, likely during the Premier League’s two-week winter break.

Fabio Cannavaro
Fabio Cannavaro is a bookie favorite to become Watford’s next permanent manager.
The 48-year-old soccer star has been closely linked to the Everton job vacancy and is part of a three-man shortlist alongside Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard.
But Watford could steal a run on the Toffees, given Cannavaro’s Italian links to Gino Pozzo.

Frank Lampard
Lampard is also the favorite for the Everton job, but Watford presents another chance for him to return to the Premier League.
He has been out of work since January 2021, when Chelsea sacked him and named Thomas Tuchel as his successor.
But Lampard has been linked to several first-tier clubs since then, including Crystal Palace, Newcastle United and Norwich.
And while Everton is likely to be his favorite, Watford are closer to home and could appeal.
Daniel Farke
Daniel Farke may be an outside candidate, but he suffered relegation and recovered with an immediate promotion with Norwich City.
Sure, this could be a very long-term project for Pozzo to get behind, but it sure would be smart.
Perhaps FARC would be a viable option if Watford were relegated and inevitably sent off the next door.
