Taylor Swift hit back at Blur star and Gorillaz Damon Albarn after claiming she doesn’t write her own songs.

Albarn made the comments in a recent interview while talking about artists who rely on ‘voice and behaviour’.

When the Los Angeles Times interviewer cited Swift as an example of someone who doesn’t rely on these things, calling her an “excellent songwriter,” Albarn replied, “She doesn’t write her own songs.”

Journalist Michael Wood responded: “Of course she does. He co-wrote some of them.”

Albarn responded, “It doesn’t matter. I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different from writing. I don’t hate anyone, I’m just saying there’s a huge difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-wrote. It doesn’t mean that the score It can’t really be great.

“And some of the greatest singers—I mean, Ella Fitzgerald has never written a song in her life. When I sing, I have to close my eyes and be there. I suppose I’m traditional in that sense. Billie Eilish and her brother are really interesting songwriters. I’m more drawn to that than Taylor Swift.” It’s just darker—infinitely less optimistic. Way more subtle and weird. I think it’s exceptional.”

In response to the interview on Twitter, Swift – who is officially credited with writing or co-writing all of her songs – posted: DamonAlbarn I was a huge fan of you until I saw this. I write all my songs. Taking you hot is completely wrong and very harmful. You don’t have to like my songs, but it’s really wrong to try to distort my writing. Fabulous.”

Commenting on the post, the singer added: “Note: I wrote this tweet myself in case you were wondering.”

Swift is widely known and popular due to her songwriting, which is often highly acknowledged. Awarded a Songwriter Icon in 2021, the National Association of Music Publishers noted that “no one is more influential when it comes to writing music today” than Swift, while The Weeknd called her the most important female songwriter of the modern era.
