Watford have appointed former England manager Roy Hodgson as their new manager on a deal until the end of the season.

Hodgson replaces Claudio Ranieri, who was sacked on Monday after three and a half months of responsibility, in 19th place at Watford, two points behind the safety zone.

The Englishman has been unemployed since leaving Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

All sides will assess Hodgson’s future at Watford at the end of the current season.

Hodgson succeeds Ranieri, who has failed to alter the team’s fortunes since his appointment in October. The Hornets entered the relegation zone in the Premier League for the first time this season after Friday’s 3-0 defeat at home to struggling Norwich.

No wins, no clean sheets, no discipline – Watford struggle

Watford have not won in nine games in all competitions (D1 L8), their longest run without a win since December 2013 (10).

Norwich enjoyed their biggest win margin in a Premier League game since their 4-0 win over West Bromwich in May 2013, and their biggest away win margin in the First Division since September 1993, with a 5-1 win over hosts Everton.

Watford have now gone 30 Premier League games without a clean sheet (since the 3-0 win over Liverpool in February 2020), with only West Bromwich Albion having endured the longest run in the competition’s history (34 in 2011; Blackburn in 2012 and Wolves in 2012). both also 30).

Since the start of 2016-2017, only Arsenal (19) have received more red cards in the Premier League than Watford (18).

When asked about his future after the loss to the Canary Islands, the former Leicester and Chelsea boss said: “I am not leaving. I want to continue because I am a fighter. I have never given up in my career.”

Under Ranieri, Watford have lost seven of their last eight league games. Their last win was a 4-1 win over Manchester United in November at Vicarage Road.

Ranieri’s departure means Watford have now sacked five head coaches since Javi Gracia’s exit in September 2019.

Quique Sanchez Flores, Nigel Pearson, Vladimir Ivic, Munoz and Ranieri all left the club during that 28-month period, while Hayden Mullins had also worked twice in that time.

Hodgson has become the Bozo family’s 15th permanent manager since they finalized their takeover of Watford in June 2012.

Watford travel to Turf Moor to face Burnley on Saturday 5 February at 6pm in a rescheduled match.

Why did Watford go for Hodgson?

Sky Sports News correspondent Gary Cottrell said:

“Roy Hodgson is a safe man with all the experience in the world. This will be his 22nd job in his 46-year career. He worked miracles at Crystal Palace in 2017.

“When he arrived, they were 0-0-7 – they lost their license for excitement! It was seven defeats from seven games, but in the end they managed to finish 11th in the Premier League and he did a similar job at Fulham.

“He is a very experienced coach who has also been at Inter Milan, Liverpool and England of course. It is clear that he is still hungry to show that he can work at the highest level even at his age.

“He left Palace on his own decision, but as he told Sky Sports News last week, he still has a hunger and thinks he can turn things around. Perhaps he caught the ear of the Watford owner from behind what he told Sky last week!

“He’s already made it to the training ground, having signed some papers on Monday.”

“Hodgson is a great date for Watford”

Sky Sports expert Paul Merson…

“I think it’s a good date, I’m already doing it. I think they need stability, and they need to stop leaking goals to the left, right and center.”

“What Roy brings is experience. He doesn’t mind 11 players playing behind and the fans booing like crazy, as long as he gets a point. That’s what they need at the moment.

“Some people might say they need someone younger who will come in and be brilliant – no, they’ve had that and get beaten up everywhere they go.

“They have every chance of staying out of trouble now.”

Hodgson will be joined at Vicarage Road by his trusted assistant Ray Livington, who has served as Watford’s technical director for nearly 20 years.

Alan Lau, head of Watford fan group Isiah Hornets, says the experienced duo will need an immediate reaction from the players if Watford are to maintain their place in the Premier League.

Lau told Sky Sports News: “Roy Hodgson is a good fit for us in our current predicament. He has extensive experience working in the Premier League, has a proven track record, and has also worked with the Pozzo family before.”

“It’s also great that he has the ex-Watford coach by his side [as assistant manager] In Ray Lewington, who was in charge of Vicarage Road when we were in a more precarious situation than we are now.

“It is imperative that Roy and Ray get a reaction from the players to give us the best chance of staying in the Premier League.”
