‘You don’t know me’: Morrissey accuses Johnny Marr of using Click Beat | Morrissey

Morrissey has accused former Smiths bandmate Johnny Marr of using his name in interviews to “clickbait” and manipulating the British press’s appetite for “cruel and brutal” statements about him.

“If you can, please just leave me out?” He wrote in an open letter published in Morrissey Central.

“The truth is you don’t know me,” Morrissey wrote. “You know nothing of my life, my intentions, my thoughts, my feelings. Yet you speak as if I were my personal psychiatrist with constant and uninterrupted access to my instincts.”

Marr responded to Morrissey’s open letter, writing on Twitter: “The ‘open letter’ hasn’t been a real thing since 1953, it’s ‘social media’ now.” Even Donald J. Trump had it. Also, that fake news business…a little 2021, yeah? “

Mar is promoting a new solo album, Fever Dreams Pts 1-4. His offensive remarks appear to come from the March 2022 issue of Uncut, where he mentioned Morrissey in a discussion about the collaboration.

“It wouldn’t be a surprise when I say I’m really close to everyone I’ve worked with – except for the obvious,” he said. “And that’s not a huge surprise because we’re so different, Morrissey and I.”

Mar is a left-wing vegetarian who runs 10 miles a day. Morrissey has slipped into disgrace for his remarks about race and politics.

After Stormzy topped the Glastonbury title in 2019, Morrissey shared a video accusing the British establishment of using the rapper to promote multiculturalism at the expense of British culture, which Morrissey posted with the headline: “Nothing but the sky blue for Stormzy… the gallows for Morrissey.” He denied accusations of racism.

Referring to Hitler as a “leftist”, he praised Brexit, expressed support for Britain’s far-right political party, criticized sexual assault survivors, and said immigration diminishes British identity. In 2019, Liverpool’s transport network Merseryrail removed advertising posters for his album California Son after a complaint from the public about his views.

In the open letter, Morrissey accused Marr of hypocrisy. “You have found me inspiring enough to compose music with me for six years. If you are, as you claim, such an ugly beast, where exactly has this left you? Kidnapped? Silent? Chained? Kidnapped by cross aliens? You were the one playing the guitar on the Golden Lights—not I.

“Yes, we all know the British press will print anything you say about me as long as it’s cruel and brutal. But you did it all. Keep going.”

Morrissey noted that the pair hadn’t been close in 35 years, “which it’s been so many ages. When we met you and I wasn’t successful. We both helped each other become what we are today.”

“Can’t you just leave it at that? Should you blame me persistently, year after year, decade after decade, for everything…from the Solomon Islands tsunami in 2007 to dodging your grandmother’s chin?”

He told Mar to go ahead and “take responsibility for your own actions and career, in which I wish you good health.”

“Just stop using my name as click bait. I’ve never attacked your solo work or your solo life and your genius was publicly praised during the days of Louder Than Bombs and Strangeways, here we come, yet you always put yourself on standby as a quote rent whenever the press requires an ugly flair On something I said halfway through the last glacial period as the Colorado River started carving out the Grand Canyon.”

Marr does not address the Morrissey issue entirely, and generally deals with journalists and fans’ curiosity about their relationship—and the obvious differences in politics and personality—on a diplomatic scale.

In 2019, Marr told NME that he wasn’t concerned about Morrissey’s controversial views affecting the Smith family’s legacy.

“I don’t think you can change history… I’m not worried. It has nothing to do with my world or my life. The songs are available for people to judge, deal with and listen to. I think all of this will be forgotten in a few weeks, because these things inevitably – for better or worse “.

That same year, he told The Independent he and Morrissey weren’t yet friends and repeated the sentence – as he often does – about them being “totally different…but everyone knows it! Everyone knows everything there is to know.”

Fans were excited for any possible sign of a reconciliation between Morrissey and Marr, who met in 2008 to discuss the possibility of reform — a discussion Marr said ended abruptly, and the topic was not brought up again.

In 2019, Marr responded to a fan on Twitter who asked if the rumors about a Smith reunion were true. Marr replied, “Nigel Farage plays guitar.”
