Netflix adds HDR and HD support for 2021 Pixel phones

It seems that the price hike was a higher priority

Netflix plays things very close to the box. When a new phone comes out, it will most likely not be able to access Netflix content in the highest quality available. Instead, you have to wait for Netflix to add it to the supported list. I’ve only done this with Google’s latest Pixel phones.

The Netflix support page tracks all Android devices certified to work with Netflix HD and HDR10 video. In a recent update, Netflix added all 2021 Google Pixel phones, including the Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, and Pixel 6 Pro. These phones can now access HD and HDR streams on supported content. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro have only been released since late 2021, but the 5a launched in August, and it’s now getting HD Netflix. Support may have previously appeared without an announcement, but it is now official.

Keep in mind that streaming Netflix over a cellular connection may limit the quality of your video. Most carriers now have basic plans that throttle video up to 480p. You will need an unlimited plan or Wi-Fi to enjoy the newly enabled video features. You also have to be on the mid-tier of Netflix to get HD, which is $16 a month now. HDR is limited to the highest 4K plan, which recently increased to $20 per month.
