Barcelona are in talks with Wolverhampton about the transfer of Adama Traore, who has not been convinced by Tottenham’s offer to use him in several positions.
Barcelona have offered a £29m loan option to make the deal permanent and Traore would like to return to the club where he began his career.
Sky Sports News reported earlier this week that Tottenham are close to a £20m deal for the 26-year-old after his previous £15m bid was turned down, but Barcelona now appear to have edged Antonio Conte’s side in the race. to sign it.
Wolverhampton coach Bruno Lagg says Traore was unimpressed by talk of a move away from the club
Sky Sports News is also aware that Tottenham will not try to persuade Traore to turn Barcelona down and will instead focus on other goals.
Tottenham continue their talks over a deal for Porto winger Luis Diaz as they seek to bolster their squad ahead of the transfer deadline.
Traore was on the bench in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Brentford but played in the last 15 minutes and watched a goal disallowed by the VAR for offside.
He has been a long-time target of Tottenham, who were in talks to sign Traore at the end of the summer transfer window. That interest remained despite a change of manager from former Wolverhampton coach Nuno Espirito Santo to Conte.
Traore’s contract expired in June 2023 and a new 15-month contract was on the table, with his current club keen to keep it.

Senior Social Safety Net Correspondent Café Solhkoll on The Transfer Show:
“It appears that Tottenham have missed Adama Traore, with Barcelona agreeing a deal in principle to take him on loan from Wolverhampton, with an option to buy in the summer for around £25m.
“Tottenham were trying to buy Traore and made an offer of 15 million pounds, which was not enough. There was some expectation that a deal could be done for around 20 million pounds, but Barcelona came for the player, who used to play for his Barcelona academy.
“And when a club like Barcelona comes for you, it’s very hard to say no and that’s why he decided to come back to Barcelona. And I really don’t think Tottenham could have done much about it.
“There are reports in Spain that he has also agreed to take a salary cut to move to Barcelona – so it seems like bad news for Tottenham as far as Traore is concerned.”
A blow to Tottenham, but Barcelona’s withdrawal is strong Photo: Tottenham were about to sign Traore
Adam Butt analysis from Sky Sports:
The loss of Adama Traore is a huge blow to Antonio Conte and Tottenham – this was a deal he believes is quite guaranteed with the club keen to add more signings as well. Failure to reach the Spanish national team leaves them facing a problem.
Traore was recognized for providing momentum at full-back as Emerson Royal lacked creativity to beat a third-placed man to the opposition. While Traore’s defense has been questioned, no one doubts his ability to carry the ball to add a new dimension.

The talk now is that he never imagined the position. Traore was used there in desperation only by Bruno Lagg – when he trails Brentford and Crystal Palace – and was last at full-back under Nuno Espirito Santo in the fall of 2019, with mixed results.
It is likely that Barcelona’s interest changed his mind. Although Traore has spent the past six and a half years in England and is doing well, Catalonia has always been his home. He joined the Barcelona youth team at the age of eight and made his debut in the club’s Spanish league at the age of 17.
The chance to return as a full-fledged international player ready to make an impact under former team-mate Xavi Hernandez is one he has been craving. Now it looks like he’s ready for the opportunity. For Spurs, the search continues.
View from Spain: Was the deal a surprise?
Spanish football expert Alvaro Monteiro has reported that Barcelona is ‘very close’ to sealing a loan deal for Wolverhampton Wolverhampton’s Adama Traore, who started his football career with the La Liga club in 2013.
Spanish football expert Alvaro Monteiro told Sky Sports:
“This is a deal that looks very close. Barcelona has not denied this story and reports here in Spain reflect that there is an agreement between the two clubs and the player. Traore loves the idea of playing again for Barcelona.
“It’s very surprising because of Barcelona’s financial situation. It’s just a loan until next summer with an option to buy – but it’s not mandatory. We must also remember that Francisco Trincao is also Jorge Mendes’ agent.
“He is a Barcelona player on loan at Wolverhampton, and he has the option to buy the player for 30 million euros. Should Traore play very well and Barcelona want to sign him permanently, perhaps Trinkao can keep the Traore key after July.
“It would be a special move for Traore and a challenge. We have to remember that he played for Barcelona B and only twice for the first team seven years ago when he was a boy. He didn’t succeed in Spain, but thanks to his performances in England he was able to call up the Spanish national team under Luis Enrique.
“He will come back to Barcelona different. When he left, the club was all about possession of the ball under Pep Guardiola and Enrique, but now you have to remember that while he has not been a typical player for Barcelona in the last 10 or 15 years, he is a very physical player who can help the current Xavi team” .
