Inflo, the multi-genre producer known for working with Adele, Little Simz and Michael Kiwanuka, has been announced as Producer of the Year at the 2022 Brit Awards.
This is the first time a non-white artist has won the award since the British founding in 1977.
“I feel honored to be a part of the change,” said Enlo, whose real name is Dean Josiah Cover. “All black producers before me, I am in awe and have studied you. I am you. Thank you for paving the way and for your integral contribution to British music.”
Inflo, who is also a songwriter, musician, and company president, came to prominence in 2014 after producing and co-writing the Kooks’ 2014 album Listen. He has since worked on award-winning projects, including Mercury Award-winning artist Michael Kwanuka’s Kiwanuka album 2019. Two of the five albums nominated for Album of the Year at this year’s BRIT Awards, Adele 30 and Little Simz’ Sometimes I May Be an Introvert, bear Credits to Inflo.
“Flo is a true creator in every sense of the word,” Little Sims said. “Music is in his DNA. He really loves this and lives and breathes. No one else deserves this award.” Kiwanuka attributed him to him as someone who “helps you find what you want to say, always puts his stamp on work that always raises the bar for music”.
Besides his work producing recordings for other artists, Inflo – who maintains a low public profile – is at the helm of Sault, a semi-anonymous British group that explores the threads of black music, culture, and history through genre-defying directing.
Salt’s breadth of work, which includes five albums released within two years, is a testament to Inflo’s skill as a multidisciplinary artist and collaborator: the effects of R&B, Soul, Funk, and House can be heard along with Lo-fi sound samples and breaks. Intimate spoken words. All of the collection’s work has been released by Inflo’s Forever Living Originals label. Their latest album Nine, released in June 2021, was a limited-time work, which was removed by the group from streaming and download services after 99 days.
Also in 2021, he produced the album Mother to soul singer Cleo Sol, who appeared on Salt Records.
Previous winners of this year’s Producer Award are Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel and Calvin Harris. In 2020, the last time the award was given, it was received by a unique producer from South London.
Unlike other Brit Award categories, the Producer Award is voted on by a panel of record company executives rather than the Brit Academy’s broader industry committee, or the public, who can vote in four new genre-focused awards this year.
Inflo is the first non-white winner in this category at the 42nd British Awards, but there has not yet been a female award winner.
Inflo will receive his award at the Brits Gala on February 8 at the O2 Arena, London. Adele, Ed Sheeran, Little Sims, and Dave each lead with four nominations.
