Tyson Fury will defend his world heavyweight title against fellow Briton Dillian White after UK-based Fury promoter Frank Warren won a bid to stage a WBC heavyweight match.
“Queensbury and Top Rank are delighted to announce that WBC and World Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury will defend their titles against Dillian White after today’s bids,” Warren wrote on Twitter on Friday. “The place and time of the fight will be announced in due course.”
Fury greeted the news by posting a video montage, with footage that includes the words: “I’m coming home now…I’m sorry now that I went away.” In a follow-up video tweet, he said, “Very happy guys. Goalkeeper [Gypsy King] Coming home,” referring to the fight that will take place in the United Kingdom.
“I can’t wait. Delian and I will put it to the test,” added the 33-year-old. Confirmation of the fight puts an end to speculation that Fury will instead face Oleksandr Usyk, the holder of the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO belts, in a unification match. Anthony Joshua deserves a rematch with the Ukrainian after losing to him last year.
Earlier this week, Joshua responded to reports that he had signed a £15m deal to forgo that comeback, allowing Fury to fight Usyk in place of Whyte, the WBC’s mandatory contender. “I haven’t signed any contract; I haven’t seen any contract…Stop listening to bullshit,” Joshua said on Monday.
According to the BBC, Warren offered £31m while Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom offered £24m – giving Fury’s team control of the fight. No date has been confirmed, but the battle should take place by April 29 this year. Wembley, Manchester Arena and Cardiff Imperial Stadium are among the potential venues.
Fury has not fought in the UK since defeating Francesco Pianeta in Belfast in August 2018. The 33-year-old’s last five matches have taken place in the US, including a hat-trick with Deontay Wilder – and most recently, in October 2021, saw him retain his world title in Las Vegas.
The recently undefeated Fury hit both White and Anthony Joshua while waiting for confirmation of his next opponent. A video posted to Warren’s Twitter account on Thursday showed Fury calling out White, following suggestions that the mandatory challenger was in a dispute with WBC over wages.
“I can’t wait to punch Dillian White in my buddy’s face,” Fury said. “I’ll give him the best hideout he’s ever had in his life, boy. Dillian White, train a tough guy because you’re going to be annihilated, boom.”
