Joe Lysette released a rare political statement after trolling the government with his fake Sue Gray report.

Earlier this week, the comedian tweeted a parody of Gray’s upcoming Downing Street party report that said MPs have a WhatsApp group called “Down It Street”.

After it was said that many members of Parliament believed the parody was real, Lycett issued a statement highly critical of the government and its handling of the pandemic.

In the spirited statement, Lycett spoke of the death of a close friend and how they were unable to hold a proper funeral for him, due to government-imposed rules that prevented large gatherings.

Lysette condemned the government for its hypocrisy and disregard for its own rules: “To hell with my dead friend, they think, and all your dead friends and dead relatives. I followed the rules and we didn’t but we’re in power and that’s all that matters so spin it.”

The 33-year-old added that the government led by Boris Johnson “is about power and a little other things”.

“They easily ignite customs and traditions if it helps them maintain their grip,” he said.

He concluded by saying that it was “absolutely wonderful” to cause “mass panic” as sections of the government believed the Sao Gray simulation was real.

There have been many reactions to Lycett’s message on social media including from fellow comedian and TV host, Sue Perkins. She tweeted, “This is the coolest message. I’m so sorry for your loss, Joe. And *** those who never followed the rules.”

As best-selling author from Wolverhampton, Caitlin Moran writes, “I love Joe Lysette.”

Musician Badly Drawn Boy tweeted: “Speech (Tweet) of the year,” in response to the post.

As Michael Chakraverty, a former contestant on Britain’s Great Bake Off, wrote: “Big love, Joe. We appreciate you.”
