Tom Tugendhat has become the first MP to say he will run to replace Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the Conservative leadership contest.
It would be a “huge privilege,” the former soldier and chair of the foreign affairs committee told Radio Times.
He said he wasn’t “couraging support,” but “of course, you should try.”
What could the Gray investigation mean to Boris Johnson?

It comes as Johnson’s premiership future remains in doubt, while the report awaits at parties in Downing Street and Whitehall.
It is understood that the report – compiled by senior government employee Sue Gray – will be sent to No. 10 soon, rather than within weeks or months.
Mr Tugendhat, the MP for Tunbridge and Mulling who has criticized the government’s handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, said he wanted to be vocal about his ambition.
He said, “It would be a huge privilege. It’s one of those questions that I know a lot of people are asking and some people and some of my colleagues don’t understand and I don’t understand why.”
“I don’t think you should be embarrassed by wanting to serve your country. I was very proud to serve my country in the Armed Forces and reached the highest rank possible so as to have the best possible effect.
“And I was very proud to be a diplomat around the world.”

On Friday, the Daily Mail reported that the centrist Conservative Party backed Tugdaat to be Johnson’s successor.
The paper said some Conservative MPs believed the chair of the foreign affairs committee represented “the best chance for a fresh start”.
The version of Ms Gray’s report due to be published will be revised to ensure she complies with an earlier request by the Metropolitan Police not to jeopardize her investigation, it is believed.
This comes after the Met said, Friday evening, that it had received information to support its investigation and denied trying to delay the report.
