19-year-old woman “wanted to scream” after checking kebab shop surveillance cameras

A young woman was shocked when she checked CCTV after her mobile phone went missing.

Student nurse Chloe McGinn, 19, realizes her phone is missing after an early morning visit to a downtown kebab shop at the end of a night on the town.

It was the second time in a month that Liverpool student John Moores lost her sophomore phone, leaving her with a contract to pay but no iPhone 13 to display.

The young woman, from Armagh in Northern Ireland, said she “panicked” when she checked CCTV on Slater Street for a takeaway.

She watched a man sneak up on her near the right side of the screen, slipping her phone out of her pocket while she waited at the kebab shop counter.

“I didn’t have any words. I just wanted to scream. He did it easily,” Chloe told ECHO.

“It was frustrating because if I visited my pocket, he wouldn’t be able to get in.

“Since I lost my phone the last time I was outside, I kept checking my pocket to make sure my phone was there.

“That was when I was at the nightclub. When I was actually at the kebab shop, I didn’t think about it. I didn’t think I needed to.

“I could see everyone. There was a place. You wouldn’t think it would happen in a kebab shop.”

She added, “Even watching the video, it was frustrating because I realized how easy it was to get it done.

“No one noticed. How many people were in that store and not a single person put his hand in my pocket.”

One of the only ways to keep in touch with friends and family in Northern Ireland, Chloe lost her treatment to homesickness.

When her ex’s phone was stolen just before Christmas, she also lost the driver’s license that she had kept in the phone case.

Until she replaced the phone, Chloe had to travel to and from her spot at Weston Hospital, waiting alone at bus stops at night with no way to contact anyone.

Chloe reported the phone stolen to the police.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson told the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO): “At approximately 3.45pm on Monday 17 January, officers were called to report an item stolen on Slater Street in Liverpool.

“It was reported that at approximately 3.45am on Sunday, January 16, the phone of a woman in Mr. Kebab on Slater Street was taken.

“Officers are currently conducting inquiries about CCTV.”
