Police in southwest Germany said two police officers were shot dead early Monday morning during a routine traffic stop.
Police in Kaiserslautern said in a statement that the shooting took place during a traffic check near Kosel at around 4:20 am.
The two dead officers are a 24-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man
The Rhineland-Palatinate state police said in a statement that police were searching for the suspects who fled the scene.
Police, who also did not have a description available of the vehicle or the suspects, said it was not clear in which direction the suspects had fled.
Police called on motorists in the Kossel area not to accompany hikers and warned that at least one suspect was armed.
“The deceased is a 24-year-old fellow and a 29-year-old fellow,” a spokesperson for West Palatinate Police Headquarters said.
“It was a normal patrol, a road inspection. Colleagues were able to radio the shots.”
“We are currently talking about several perpetrators,” he added.
Speaking to German company Spiegel, the spokesperson added: “Their colleagues are touched, and they know each other. West Palatinate is not particularly great.”
