Leeds United face Takumi Minamino transfer ‘complication’

Leeds United face huge complications if they’re to make a last ditch attempt to sign Takumi Minamino before today’s transfer deadline.

Express journalist Ryan Taylor noted in his latest transfer update that the player being away on international duty could hinder his chances of securing a late move.

“Takumi Minamino is obviously a player they [Leeds United] are looking at,” he said. Minamino is currently away with Japan.

“The issue any club looking to do business with Liverpool for Minamino has that, because of COVID, foreign nationals cannot enter Japan, at the moment to undergo a medical.

“Given the time at the moment, to get a delegate out to Japan to conduct a medical would be a problem, anyway. But, since the signing of Luis Diaz, Liverpool have altered their stance on Divock Origi and Minamino.

“Leeds asked the question, and asked whether Minamino would be available this month.”

Liverpool themselves faced a race against time to wrap up dates to sign Luis Diaz over the weekend, which was helped by sending a delegate out to Argentina to conduct the player’s medical.

Current Covid guidelines for entry into Japan state: ‘Foreign nationals (including British nationals) who do not have existing resident status are not permitted to enter Japan for any purpose, other than in exceptional circumstances’.

Minamino has been away with Japan for their latest World Cup qualifiers and he’s in action against Saudi Arabia tomorrow morning (UK time).

While a deal is certainly not impossible, should it go through ‘subject to a medical’, the logistics make it difficult for any club looking to sign the forward with little time remaining in the transfer window.
