Wichita Kansas: A 4.5-magnitude earthquake hits the city, according to the US Geological Survey

People across Wichita and south-central Kansas say on social media that they felt an earthquake that shook the area late Monday morning.

Reports started appearing on Twitter and Facebook shortly after 11am

The USGS earthquake map says the epicenter was about seven kilometers – or 4.3 miles – northwest of Medford, Oklahoma, not far from the Kansas-Oklahoma state line. It was about 7.8 kilometers deep and had a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale, according to the US Geological Survey.

The epicenter was 75 miles south of Wichita.

But it was powerful enough to make the ground vibrate across the city for several seconds, causing a flurry of online posts.

Those who felt the earthquake described it as “very strong” just barely there.

One person in southern Wichita said his tanks shook. Another Twitter user wrote that it rocked their College Hill home for “a long time”.

There were also leaflets from people in the city center and western parts of the city.

The US Geological Survey says the quake occurred at 11:10 a.m.
