Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer told Sky News that people who followed COVID rules would “feel as if the Prime Minister took them for mugs”.

Speaking to Kay Burley, Sir Keir said many members of the public would feel “outrage, sadness and guilt” looking back at how they obeyed COVID-19 restrictions over the past two years and the sacrifices they had to make.

He said Boris Johnson was “degrading” the position of prime minister and “must go” following the release of a partial version of the Sue Gray report, which he described as “indebted as he can be”.

The chief civil servant who is leading the Cabinet Office’s investigation into the party’s allegations said the Downing Street lockdown rallies represented a “serious failure” and “difficult to justify”.

Sir Keir’s comments come after the deputy prime minister claimed Johnson could not answer specific questions about the shutdown of parties in Downing Street because he did not want to prejudice the police investigation.

“If he starts answering specific questions that have been referred to the police, he will be charged, in fact, fairly and equitably, with bias, obstruction or interference with this investigation,” Dominic Raab told Kay Burley.

His response came after he was asked if the prime minister attended an event at Apartment 10 in November 2020, one of 12 gatherings the Metropolitan Police is investigating.

On Monday, the force said it received more than 300 photos and 500 paper pieces as part of its investigation into events during the COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 and 2021.

But Sir Keir said Mr Raab’s position was “nonsense” and “limiting absurdity”, accusing the prime minister of “forcing all his deputies to your programs and others to make themselves complete idiots, exploiting these ridiculous defences”.

Raab said it was true that police had now been given “time and space” to conduct their investigation.
