The Team17 worm builder is now official in the NFT line of work. The company, which is one of the UK’s largest video game publishers, has announced that it has partnered with Reality Gaming Group, a UK-based digital asset trading (DAT) platform, to create NFT Holdings based on its long-running Gunner Tactics series. In doing so, I opened a can of worms between it and the many video game studios that publish under it.

Announced late yesterday, Team17 and Reality Gaming Group have announced the collaboration on officially licensed NFT holdings (the “non-fungible token”) codenamed MetaWorms. Describing it as a “one-of-a-kind work of art” that would “include content across the 26-year history of the beloved Worms franchise,” Team17 asserted that MetaWorms would be “high-quality” and “low-energy” collectibles intended to give fans “the opportunity to own a unique piece of Video Game Memorabilia”, a description purportedly intended to preemptively avoid public criticism regarding the environmental costs of establishing and deed NFTs.

Team17’s announcement is the latest in a series of similar announcements by major game publishers, including Square Enix, Ubisoft and Konami, with the goal of creating NFTs based on their existing characteristics.
