Darwin wakes up to a 6.0-magnitude earthquake near the Banda Sea

Darwin locals woke up to their beds shivering and objects falling off shelves after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Darwin’s residents were once again hit by an earthquake on Wednesday morning.

The earthquake occurred in the Banda Sea, about 321 kilometers northeast of East Timor, and is believed to have a magnitude of between 6.0 and 6.2 on the Richter scale.

The Met Office said the quake was felt in the Northern Territory capital, but there were no tsunami warnings for Australia.

Locals woke up to their beds shaking and took things off the shelves around 3.47am local time.

It was recorded at a depth of 129 km.

The earthquake is believed to have been a follow-up to a larger earthquake in the area just over a month ago.

The 7.3-magnitude earthquake in the Banda Sea shook residents in the northern Northern Territory.

Geoscience Australia said the area often had “high activity”.

A man took to Twitter saying his entire unit was shaken.

“Things fell off the shelves, the wife and daughter woke up,” wrote Sarjit Gill.

“I wanted to run for safety, so I said, ‘Just go to sleep, it’s less than the previous earthquake.'”

Another woman said she woke up in bed shivering.

Just a week ago, Perth was also shocked by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake.
