And Kane, who left the club 13 years ago, is now deciding whether to take over as Lee Johnson’s successor.
Johnson was discharged after Bolton’s 6-0 win over Wearsiders in the First Division on Saturday.
Louis-Dreyfus said they were “overwhelmed” by the applicants.
Another former Sunderland manager, Mick McCarthy, and Neil Warnock have thrown their hat into the ring, with Grant McCann, Neil Lennon and Alex Neill also on the radar.
Kane, 50, who led the Black Cats to the 2007 championship title, has been unable to train since Ipswich sacked him in 2011.
But it is believed that the fiery Irish could reignite the third-placed hopes of promotion to Sunderland.

Kane is a Sky Analyst having trained with the Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
The Black Cats were Keane’s first hot seat, but the Manchester United icon left under a cloud and later said: “It still saddens me.
“I still think I should be the manager of Sunderland.”
Mike Dodds will take charge against Doncaster on Saturday, with Jermain Defoe expected to feature for the second time.
