What happens if the prime minister resigns?
If Paul Gevan resigns from his position as First Minister, Sinn Fein First Deputy Minister Michelle O’Neill will be automatically removed from her position due to the joint nature of their position.
Thereafter, a seven-day countdown begins for both parties to re-nominate each position.
If either party refuses to be re-elected, a properly functioning executive body cannot be constituted and the UK Government has the legal responsibility to call elections to the Assembly within a reasonable time.
With less than 100 days to go until elections scheduled for May, Secretary of State Brandon Lewis is unlikely to change the date.
While the executive branch will not be able to meet, the remaining ministers are expected to be able to perform limited functions.
It is also expected that the Stormont Assembly will still meet, which means that legislation passing through the Chamber can be completed.
