Neighbors fans launch petition to save show after funding pull

Since news was announced that the popular Australian soap Neighbors has been dropped by Channel 5, fans of the long-running soap have spoken up to keep the show and launched a petition in the hopes that this may help to sway any decisions.

In an official statement, a Channel 5 spokesperson said: “Neighbors will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer. It’s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.”

Fremantle executive producer Jason Herbison explained that without a new UK broadcaster “production must end, effectively resting the show”.

Australian Channel 10, which airs Neighbors added: “It is our intention to continue our association with Neighbors if another broadcast partner comes forward. Channel 10 has an ongoing commitment to the show, the cast and crew and is hopeful that Fremantle will find a new production partner. We will provide further updates as they become available.”

While discussions are underway, loyal fans of the show, which has been running for almost 37 years, have launched a petition.

Started by Edward Skylover, the petition has gained almost 10,000 signatures at the time of writing, with the petition highlighting that the show has been a “source of comfort to generations”.

“Neighbors has been a staple on UK screens for over 35 years and has been watched by generations. It now faces the ax due to reports that Channel 5 are struggling to come to a deal with Fremantle Media.

“Neighbors is more than just a TV show – it is a source of comfort and entertainment for generations of fans who have watched it for decades. It is one of the most loved TV shows in the UK and brings lots of viewers from all backgrounds to Channel 5’s catalog of channels. Even Adele is a fan. Channel 5, we plead with you, please find a way to keep neighbors on air.”

Neighbors airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
