Paul Collingwood will lead England through the Test series in the West Indies

England have appointed Paul Collingwood as interim head coach for their March round of three Tests in the West Indies.

The appointment follows the sacking of both former coach Chris Silverwood and managing director Ashley Giles last week, following England’s 4-0 loss to Australia.

The former England international, Collingwood, was assistant coach under Silverwood and took charge of the 3-2 defeat in the T20 series last month in the West Indies.

“I am really excited to lead the test team for the Caribbean Tour,” Collingwood said. “I can’t wait to get started.

“Having a tough Test streak against the West Indies straight from the Ashes disappointment gives us a chance from now on to reset and rebuild.

“Playing test matches in England is the highest honor in the game. My goal is to give the players clarity, direction and encouragement for them to start building something special.”

Collingwood’s appointment came on the heels of Sir Andrew Strauss taking over as interim managing director, with a request to reset England’s red ball cricket setup after just one win in its last 14 test matches.

Strauss confirmed last week that Joe Root will remain the Test captain, while the England team for the West Indies Tour, which begins on March 1, is set to be named on Tuesday,

“Although they know it won’t be easy, they have the desire and the courage to do things differently to ensure the team thrives.

“We have a chance to get back on the right track.”

Petersen: Collingwood is perfect to lead England

Collingwood was assistant coach under Chris Silverwood

Collingwood’s appointment for the next round only indicates that England are planning to secure a permanent successor to Selfwood in the June home Test series against New Zealand.

Whether the 45-year-old is seen as a viable long-term alternative to Silverwood remains to be seen, but as a former England captain in white ball cricket and a highly-rated coach in his own right, the next few weeks could offer An opportunity for him to make his case as a leading local candidate.

The last time an interim coach took the reins of a series in the West Indies, Andy Flower in 2009 after Peter Morris was fired, he went on to work permanently and had tremendous success taking the Test side to number one in the world. Strauss was Flower’s captain and considered Collingwood a reliable teammate.

Ahead of Monday’s announcement, another member of that highly successful England squad, Kevin Petersen, threw his support behind Collingwood for the permanent role.

The focus should not shift away from how poor county cricket is and I think Strauss knows that. @Colly622 is perfect for driving England. There is no ‘branded’ coach who can fix English batting.

It starts from the bottom!

Petersen tweeted on Sunday: “The focus should not shift from how bad county cricket is and I think Strauss knows that.”

“@Colly622 is perfect for leading England. No ‘excellent name’ coach can fix England strikes.

“It starts from the bottom!”
