Pravda questions claim Kamila Valieva may have drunk banned substance from grandfather’s glass

Pravda have questioned Kamila Valieva’s claim that the 15-year-old figure skater’s positive test for a banned substance came about because of contamination with her grandfather’s medication.

Valieva, who said she was “happy but emotionally tired’ in an interview with a Russian broadcaster, is allowed to compete in Tuesday’s women’s singles event following a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling over her positive test for banned heart medication trimetazidine.

Further details of Sunday’s hearing have now emerged with Denis Oswald, permanent chair of the International Olympic Committee’s disciplinary commission, saying part of Valieva’s defence focused around a supposed mix-up with her grandfather’s health medication.

“Her argument was this contamination happened with a product her grandfather was taking,” he said.

His comment followed reports by Russian broadsheet newspaper Pravda that Valieva’s mother Alsu Valieva and lawyer Anna Kozmenko claimed during the hearing that her grandfather, who takes trimetazidine for a heart condition, may have been responsible for traces ending up in the skater’s body.

Attempting to explain the positive test, they suggested that Valieva could have drunk from the same glass as her grandfather, which might still have traces of saliva from him on it.

Yet Pravda, which was formerly the official newspaper of the Communist Party, questioned her claims.

“Experts do not believe this version,” Pravda reported. “Trimetazidine comes available in film-coated tablets or capsules. The drug can only dissolve in the intestines. The only way to transfer the active substance to another person is through vomiting, experts believe.”
