Women dying needlessly after GPs miss early signs of ovarian cancer | News

Women are “dying of ignorance” as GPs and patients miss key symptoms of ovarian cancer, experts have said.

Figures show that awareness of warning signs of the disease is “disappointingly low” and they are often mistaken for common conditions such as cystitis or irritable bowel syndrome.

Research by the charity Target Ovarian Cancer reveals that 79 per cent of women do not know that bloating is one of the symptoms and 68 per cent do not know that abdominal pain could be a sign. Some 40 per cent of UK women wrongly think that cervical screening detects ovarian cancer, an increase from 30 per cent in a 2016 survey.

Many women report having their symptoms dismissed by GPs, resulting in the cancer being too far
