M1 exit closed as 44-tonne lorry carrying tires burst into flames on carriageway

A lorry carrying tons of tires caught fire on the M1 this morning.

The 44-tonne HGV had been traveling on the northbound carriageway on approach to the Junction 23 exit at Loughborough when it caught fire.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue crews were called to the scene at around 8am and traffic had to be stopped as the incident was dealt with.

A large cloud of smoke billowed from the scene as the flames were tackled and traffic had to be held across all lanes.

A spokesperson for Leicesershire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that it had received a call from the driver of the lorry who was uninjured.

Traffic was released shortly before 9am but the slip road remained closed while the lorry was dampened down.

The lorry was recovered by 10.15am and the road was fully reopened.

The cause of the incident is currently unknown.
