A Highways worker has died after an Audi police were chasing hit the vehicle he was in.
Police said officers were trying to stop the Audi shortly after 5am on the M6 northbound between junctions 14 and 15, when the vehicle crashed into the stationary Highways vehicle.
The man in the stationary vehicle was pronounced dead a short time later.
Officers say they believed the Audi was involved in an incident in the West Midlands area.
The man was in his 40s was the driver and was the only person in the vehicle.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody.
The incident has also been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
A National Highways spokesperson said: “At National Highways we want everyone to get home safe and well.
“Tragically this morning this couldn’t happen for one of our road workers who were working on the M6 improvement scheme.
“Our thoughts remain with their family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”
The crash led to hours of delays on Saturday for motorists, although it was unclear for much of the day what had happened.
The route was shut between the two northbound junctions and motorists yet to travel were earlier urged to plan ahead. There were officially delays of up to 45 minutes this morning, but drivers reported that journeys were taking much longer than that, reports Birmingham Live.
By 2pm, the route had been cleared but there was still a lot of traffic.
