Queen to miss Commonwealth Day service and asks Prince Charles to take her place

She still hopes to attend a memorial service for the Duke of Edinburgh on March 29, also at Westminster Abbey. However, the Duke of Sussex confirmed on Friday that he would not travel back to Britain to attend.

The decision to miss the Commonwealth Day service will not have been taken lightly, and will raise questions about how much the Queen can be expected to do for her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June.

Her diary is already being carefully “paced”, it is understood, with her appearances likely to be far shorter and more selective than her last milestone, the Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

A Spokesman for the Queen said on Friday night: “After discussing the arrangements with the Royal household, the Queen has asked the Prince of Wales to represent Her Majesty at the Commonwealth service at Westminster Abbey on Monday. The Queen will continue with other planned engagements, including in-person audiences, in the week ahead.

“As planned, the service will be attended by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Princess Alexandra.”
